The Reason I Began to Write “Cherry”

Cherry.

This name marks

my third birth.

​

 

I was once Mindle,

then became known as Min Che-hyun,

passing through Japan and Hong Kong,

and at last, I became Cherry.

​

 

I moved between different names,

loving many times,

losing many times,

and finding myself again.

​

 

And Cherry

became a poem.

​

 

This collection of poems

is the story of a character named “Cherry,”

and at the same time,

a record that she once passed through

this world.

​

 

Her deeply personal story

slowly expands into a universal story

for everyone,

and finally,

finds its way to liberation.

​

 

For a ripened cherry

offers its tender flesh to someone,

then returns once more to a seed,

to bear another fruit again.
